Relent is built for sensitive moments. We collect as little as we can, we never sell your data, and we never use it for advertising. This page explains what we keep, where it goes, and how to remove it.

Who We Are

Relent is a private self-reflection tool for everyday hard moments. It is not therapy, not a diagnostic tool, and not a crisis service. This policy covers this website and the Relent app at relent.life/try.

What We Collect — and Why

1. Your Check-Ins

A check-in is a short series of choices: how you feel, where you notice it in your body, which part of life it is about, and the thought and urge that came with it. A few screens also have an optional box to type in. Typing is never required.

If you use Relent without an account, your check-ins and history stay in this browser, encrypted with a key kept in the same browser. We do not receive them. If you clear this site’s data in your browser, they are deleted for good.

Anything you type is checked on your device for signs that you might need urgent support. What you type is never sent to the AI or to analytics.

2. Your Account and Google Sign-In

You can use Relent without an account. If you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address, profile picture and Google account ID with Relent. We use them only to sign you in, to recognise your account on each device, and to show which account you are signed in with. We do not access your Gmail, contacts, calendar, Drive, or any other Google data.

While you are signed in, your account holds the name and age you give Relent, your progress counts, and your check-in history, so they follow you to any device you sign in on. Your check-in history and account backup are encrypted before they leave your device, with a random account data key. We store that key on our servers in encrypted form. This protects your history if our database alone were ever exposed, but it is not zero-knowledge: our service can unlock the key for your signed-in app. Account data is stored with Supabase, our sign-in and database provider.

If the safety check opens crisis support while you are signed in, we record that it happened, when, and which check-in it was. We never record your answers. We use this record only to review how the safety check is working.

Relent’s use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We never sell Google user data, never use it for advertising, and never use it to train AI models.

3. AI Reflections (Signed In Only)

Most of what Relent shows you is written by fixed rules that run on your device, not by AI. If you are signed in, some results may also ask Anthropic’s Claude to write a short reflection. Claude receives only the choices from that one check-in, such as the feelings, thought and urge you picked. It never receives your name, email, account ID, past check-ins, or anything you typed.

These requests go through our own server, which checks each request and keeps a daily count per account to enforce a usage limit. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, this data is not used to train its models. If the AI is unavailable, you get the version written on your device instead.

4. Product Analytics (Optional)

Product analytics is off unless you explicitly enable Help improve Relent on the Profile tab. When it is on, PostHog receives events about how the app is used — for example, which screens were reached and which options were picked — with a random ID for this browser. It never receives your name, email, account ID, or anything you type, and we do not link these events to your account. You can turn it off at any time.

Even while analytics is off, the analytics code keeps that random ID in your browser (in local storage and one first-party cookie). Nothing is sent while it is off.

5. Error Reports

When something goes wrong in the app, Sentry receives a technical report: what failed, your browser and device type, and the app version. Before a report is sent, a filter removes check-in content, names, email addresses and other text. We also measure how quickly a sample of screens load.

6. Reminders (Optional)

Reminders are off unless you turn them on. If you turn them on in a web browser, we store that browser’s push address and the keys used to encrypt messages to it, your time zone, the reminder time you chose and which reminders are on, and when you last opened Relent and last finished a check-in (the time only, never what you answered). We use these only to send the reminders you asked for at the right local time, and to skip a reminder when you have already checked in that day. This record is not linked to your name, email or account.

Reminder messages are the same short text for everyone and contain nothing from your check-ins. They are delivered by your browser’s push service (Google for Chrome, Mozilla for Firefox, Apple for Safari, Microsoft for Edge) and are encrypted, so that service cannot read them.

7. Moving to the Home Screen Icon (iPhone and iPad)

On an iPhone or iPad, the Home Screen icon keeps its own storage, separate from Safari’s. When you follow the Add to Home Screen steps, Relent stores an encrypted copy of your data so the icon can pick it up. The key to unlock it stays in the icon’s link and is never sent to us. The copy is cleared when the icon opens it, and it expires after 72 hours.

8. This Website

The pages of relent.life outside the app use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and does not identify you. It does not run inside the app.

What We Do Not Do

Relent is not a medical device or a health service. Your check-ins can still be sensitive, and we handle them that way.

Who We Share Data With

We do not sell your data. Service providers process data only to run the parts of Relent described above:

Each provider handles data under its own terms, and some process data outside your country. We may also disclose data to legal authorities if the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety.

In the app, Profile → Export my data saves a copy of your Relent data as a file, and Profile → Delete Account deletes your account. For anything else, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Cookies and Browser Storage

The app keeps your data, your settings, and your sign-in in your browser’s storage (local storage and IndexedDB). It sets one first-party cookie, from the analytics code described above. We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.

Children

Relent is for adults. You must be at least 18 to use it. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has given us personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

When we change this policy, we post the new version on this page and update the "Last updated" date at the top.
